Peace body officially starts work in Helmand

Peace body officially starts work in Helmand

Feb 27, 2011 - 19:25

LASHKARGAH (PANinfo-icon): The newly-created high peace councilinfo-icon for southern Helmand province on Sunday officially launched its activities aimed at bringing militants back to a normal life.

Brought into being two months ago, the council members held their second meeting in Lashkargah, the provincial capital, to decide on the formation of working committees.

Governor Gulab Mangal, who heads the 35-member peace body, said that leading members of the council were officials from the police headquarters, the intelligence department and the Afghan National Army.

He said officials from the security departments had been picked as leading members because they had the ability to recognise and facilitate rebels for talks.

He said the council with a head and three working committees was a composition of tribal elders belonging to different parts of the province.

A member of the council, Maulviinfo-icon Mehar Dil, a religious scholar, urged his colleagues to work for the sake of God and people instead of serving their own interests.

He said that people of Helmand were longing for peace and stability in their areas and the council was a hope for them to get rid of the conflict.

Another member of the council, Haji Zahir, urged common people and militants to play their part in securing peace in the province.

Since the establishment of the peace body two months back, 14 insurgents have so far joined the peace process in Helmand.
