24 militants eliminated in Ghazni offensive

GHAZNI CITY (Pajhwok): At least 24 Talibaninfo-icon insurgents have been killed and 14 others wounded during an ongoing operation in southern Ghazni province, officials said on Tuesday.

Mohammad Haneef Rizaee, spokesman for 203rd Thunder Military Corps third brigade, told Pajhwok Afghan News security forces launched the clearing operation codenamed (Khalid) two days ago in Gero district.

He said 24 militants were killed and 14 others wounded during the offensive in Pana, Ahad and Safarwal areas.

Vehicles, motorcycles and other ammunition belonging to the Taliban were also destroyed. He assured security forces and civilians suffered no casualties.

Police spokesman Faheem Amarkhel confirmed the operation and it had ended successfully in Gero district.

Azizullah, an inhabitant of the locality, confirmed clashes between Taliban and security personnel in the area over the two days and said security personnel were able to capture more areas from insurgents.

He warned the areas would fall to the Taliban again if the security forces did not establish check-posts.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said six security personnel and one of their fighters were killed, four fighters and four police were injured in clashes in Gero. He said one tank belonging to security forces was destroyed.
