Police spokesman Fahim Amarkhel told Pajhwok Afghan News the firefight erupted in the Waro area of Gilan district on Friday. Capt. Abdul Mateen was killed along with three other police personnel.

At least two policemen were wounded in the clash, in which seven insurgents were also killed and four other wounded, the spokesman said. Reinforcements reached the area and pushed back the militants.
