LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): Officials in southern Helmand province are optimistic about the implementation of the TAPI project, saying it will help improve security besides paving the ground for economic development.

Work on The Turkmenistan-Afghanistaninfo-icon-Pakistan-India (TAPI) pipeline will be launched in the near future in Afghanistan. An awareness-promoting meeting was held in Lashkargah, Helmand’s capital, on Sunday.

Speaking at the gathering, acting governor, Bismillah Rohani, termed TAPI project as vital for Afghanistan and the region.

“We know the project will create job opportunities for people on the one hand and help improve the security situation on the other it. We want the public to be aware of its benefits.”

He called upon people to help the government in implementation of the project and provide support to relevant organisations.

Provincial council member Karim Khan Atal hoped the mega project would bring positive changes to the region. “We are seeking our benefits in this project as it will increase real estate prices and establish substations.”

Atal added the project would have a positive impact on relations among the countries involved.

TAPI project representative Khalil Rahman also spoke on the occasion, saying 15,000 people would find jobs.

“The pipeline will traverse an 816 kilomteres area in Afghanistan, including 134 kilometres through Greshk and Washer districts of Helmand. About 12,000 to 15,000 technical and non-technical employees will be hired on the project.”

He said more public awareness gatherings would be conducted to highlight significance of the project. Afghanistan will earn nearly $400 million in transit fee from the project.
